Nutraceuticals
A nutraceutical is simply a product that is intended to provide additional health benefits, in addition to the nutritional benefits its derivative food would provide. The roots of the term Nutraceutical can be dated back to 1989 by a researcher and founder of the Foundation for Innovation in Medicine, Stephen De Felice. He defined a nutraceutical as a “food, or parts of a food, that provide medical or health benefits, including the prevention and treatment of disease”. However, the FDA will require that a company only lay claim that a product can support the functions of the body, and cannot claim to treat diseases and must include this on the label. Nutraceuticals, in the US, are monitored as a dietary supplement, a drug, food ingredient, or food depending on its ingredients and label claims.
